While spending the summer at the Dursleys’ residence, Harry Potter encounters Dobby, a house-elf with a dire warning: He must not return to Hogwarts, as peril awaits him. When Harry refuses to comply, Dobby takes drastic action by disrupting a crucial dinner hosted by the Dursleys, who subsequently imprison Harry to prevent his escape. Fortunately, Harry’s loyal friend Ron Weasley and his brothers, Fred and George, come to his rescue in their father’s enchanted flying car.
Their escapade continues in Diagon Alley, where Harry, the Weasleys, and Hermione Granger come across Gilderoy Lockhart, Hogwarts’ new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, engaged in a book signing. At the event, Harry observes Draco Malfoy’s father, Lucius, surreptitiously placing a book in Ginny Weasley’s cauldron. Following an unsuccessful attempt to access Platform Nine and Three-Quarters at King’s Cross railway station, Harry and Ron resort to taking the flying car to Hogwarts, leading to an unfortunate collision with the Whomping Willow, resulting in a damaged wand for Ron and a detention for both.
During their detention, Harry hears an eerie voice and later discovers the cat of the caretaker, Argus Filch, petrified next to a chilling message written in blood: “The Chamber of Secrets has been opened, enemies of the heir… beware.” According to legend, Hogwarts founder Salazar Slytherin constructed a hidden Chamber containing a monster that only his heir could control, with the power to cleanse the school of Muggle-born students. In an attempt to solve this ominous mystery, Harry, Ron, and Hermione devise a plan to interrogate Malfoy using Polyjuice Potion, which they brew in a bathroom haunted by Moaning Myrtle, a ghost.
During a Quidditch match, Harry sustains a broken arm due to a rogue Bludger. Dobby visits him in the infirmary and confesses to closing the Platform Nine and Three-Quarters barrier and manipulating the Bludger to force Harry out of the school. Dobby also reveals that the Chamber had been opened in the past. Harry’s ability to communicate with a snake further fuels suspicions that he might be the heir. Disguised as two of Malfoy’s associates, Harry and Ron discover that Malfoy is not the heir but learn of the tragic death of a Muggle-born girl during the previous opening of the Chamber.

Harry stumbles upon an enchanted diary that once belonged to former student Tom Riddle, who had previously opened the Chamber and framed Rubeus Hagrid, leading to Hagrid’s expulsion. When the diary vanishes and Hermione falls victim to petrification, Harry and Ron confront Hagrid for answers. Professor Dumbledore, Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge, and Lucius Malfoy arrive to apprehend Hagrid and dismiss Dumbledore from his position. However, Dumbledore cryptically instructs Harry and Ron to “follow the spiders.” Their quest in the Forbidden Forest leads them to Hagrid’s colossal pet spider, Aragog, who clears Hagrid’s name and offers a partial clue about the Chamber’s monster.
A page from Hermione’s hand-written notes identifies the monster as a basilisk, a colossal serpent that petrifies or kills those who make direct eye contact. The victims had only seen the basilisk indirectly. As the school becomes aware that Ginny has been taken into the Chamber, Gilderoy Lockhart is nominated to save her. However, Harry and Ron uncover Lockhart’s true nature as a charlatan. They pinpoint the entrance to the Chamber in Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom. Inside, Lockhart tries to thwart them with a memory charm, but due to Ron’s malfunctioning wand, the spell backfires, erasing Lockhart’s memory and causing a cave-in that separates Harry from Ron and Lockhart.
Harry ventures into the Chamber alone and discovers Ginny unconscious, guarded by Tom Riddle, who is, in fact, Slytherin’s heir and a younger version of Voldemort. He had manipulated Ginny through the diary to reopen the Chamber. Following a declaration of loyalty to Dumbledore, the headmaster’s pet phoenix, Fawkes, arrives with the Sorting Hat, leading to a confrontation with the basilisk summoned by Riddle. Fawkes blinds the basilisk, and the Sorting Hat produces the Sword of Gryffindor, with which Harry engages in a fierce battle with the serpent. Although bitten by the basilisk, Harry manages to stab the diary with a basilisk fang, destroying Riddle and saving Ginny.
Fawkes’ healing tears mend Harry’s wound, and he returns to Hogwarts with his friends, including the bewildered Lockhart, earning the praise of Dumbledore and securing Hagrid’s release from Azkaban. Harry confronts Lucius Malfoy, Dobby’s master, for planting the diary in Ginny’s cauldron and cunningly persuades him to release Dobby. The petrified victims are restored, Hermione reunites with Harry and Ron, and Hagrid’s name is finally cleared.
