At Malfoy Manor, Severus Snape convenes with Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Snape informs them that the Order of the Phoenix plans to move Harry Potter, who is no longer safeguarded by his mother’s protective spell, to a secure location. Voldemort seizes Lucius Malfoy’s wand, as his own is ineffective against Harry’s wand, both of which share the same phoenix feather core. During the operation, Harry survives Voldemort’s attack, but Mad-Eye Moody is killed, and Hedwig perishes as well.

Preparations for Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour’s wedding are underway when the new Minister for Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, arrives with important news. He discloses to Harry, Ron, and Hermione that Albus Dumbledore left them individual bequests: Ron receives a Deluminator, Hermione a copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, and Harry is given the Golden Snitch from his first Quidditch match. Dumbledore had also willed the Sword of Gryffindor to Harry, but it has mysteriously disappeared.

During the wedding reception, news reaches them that the Ministry has fallen, and Scrimgeour has been murdered. Death Eaters launch an assault, compelling Harry, Ron, and Hermione to flee to Number 12, Grimmauld Place. During their stay, Ron deduces that Sirius Black’s brother, Regulus Black, is the mysterious “R.A.B.” who had stolen Salazar Slytherin’s locket from Voldemort. Mundungus Fletcher, a local thief, later sold it to Dolores Umbridge. Harry, Ron, and Hermione infiltrate the Ministry to recover the locket but are pursued by Death Eaters during their escape. In the ensuing chaos, Hermione disapparates them to an unknown forest while Ron sustains injuries. The trio resolves to embark on a quest to locate and destroy all of Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes, beginning with the locket.

Their initial attempts to destroy the locket prove unsuccessful. Hermione deduces that Gryffindor’s sword, impregnated with basilisk venom, can obliterate Horcruxes. However, Ron, influenced by the dark locket, becomes increasingly agitated with their slow progress and irrationally jealous of Harry and Hermione. A heated argument ensues between him and Harry, after which Ron disapparates, leaving Harry and Hermione to continue their mission. When Harry presses his lips to the Golden Snitch, it reveals a cryptic message: “I open at the close.” Hermione recognizes a peculiar symbol in Beedle the Bard’s book, which happens to be identical to a symbol worn by Luna Lovegood’s father, Xenophilius.

Harry and Hermione embark on a search for the sword in Godric’s Hollow, where they encounter the same symbol in a cemetery. They are invited into the home of elderly historian Bathilda Bagshot, who possesses a photo of the young man from Harry’s dream who stole a wand from wandmaker Gregorovitch. However, Bathilda morphs into Voldemort’s snake, Nagini, and attacks Harry. Hermione disapparates them to safety, but her rebounding spell inadvertently shatters Harry’s wand. A peculiar photo of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the picture album raises their curiosity. That evening, a doe patronus guides Harry to a frozen pond, where he retrieves Gryffindor’s sword from the bottom. However, the locket around Harry’s neck tightens, almost strangling him. Ron unexpectedly appears, rescues Harry, and destroys the locket Horcrux using the sword. Ron explains that the Deluminator had led him to their location.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione subsequently visit Xenophilius Lovegood, who divulges the significance of the symbol as representing the Deathly Hallows. According to legend, three brothers received items that allowed them to elude Death: the Resurrection Stone, the Cloak of Invisibility, and the Elder Wand, known as the most potent wand. Possessing all three would make someone the Master of Death. Xenophilius secretly alerts the Death Eaters to Harry’s presence, hoping to exchange Harry for his kidnapped daughter, Luna. The three narrowly escape but are captured by Snatchers. During a vision, Harry learns that Voldemort seeks the Elder Wand, which is interred with Dumbledore.

At Malfoy Manor, Bellatrix Lestrange discovers that a Snatcher has Gryffindor’s sword, which she believed was in her Gringotts vault. Harry and Ron are locked in a cellar along with Luna, Ollivander, and Griphook, a Goblin. Meanwhile, Bellatrix torments Hermione. Harry uses a shard of a magical mirror to call for help, believing he has glimpsed Dumbledore in it. Dobby arrives in response and helps rescue everyone, while Harry retrieves their confiscated wands from Draco Malfoy. As they disapparate to safety, Bellatrix hurls a knife, killing Dobby. Harry buries Dobby near Bill and Fleur’s seaside cottage, an Order of the Phoenix safe house. Meanwhile, Voldemort reclaims the Elder Wand from Dumbledore’s tomb.
