After burying Dobby, Harry Potter seeks the assistance of the goblin Griphook to aid him, along with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, in breaking into Bellatrix Lestrange’s vault at Gringotts bank, suspecting a Horcrux might be hidden there. In exchange for his cooperation, Griphook requests the Sword of Gryffindor. Ollivander, the wandmaker, informs Harry that two wands taken from Malfoy Manor belonged to Bellatrix and Draco Malfoy. He senses that Draco’s wand has changed its allegiance to Harry, who had taken it from Draco. They do discover a Horcrux, Helga Hufflepuff’s cup, in Bellatrix’s vault, but Griphook seizes the sword and abandons them. Trapped by security, they release the dragon guardian and escape Gringotts on its back. A furious Voldemort is revealed in Harry’s vision, angry about the theft. Harry also realizes that a Horcrux associated with Rowena Ravenclaw is hidden at Hogwarts. They apparate into Hogsmeade and are aided by Aberforth Dumbledore, who reveals a secret passage into Hogwarts. Neville Longbottom guides them through it.
Severus Snape becomes aware of Harry’s return and threatens to punish anyone who assists him, be they staff or students. Harry confronts Snape, leading to a duel with Professor McGonagall. She rallies the Hogwarts community for battle. Luna Lovegood encourages Harry to speak to Helena Ravenclaw’s ghost, who reveals that Voldemort used “dark magic” on her mother’s diadem. She also discloses that the diadem is hidden within the Room of Requirement. Ron and Hermione, in the Chamber of Secrets, destroy the Horcrux cup using a Basilisk fang. In the Room of Requirement, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are confronted by Draco, Blaise Zabini, and Gregory Goyle. A cursed fire, Fiendfyre, is unleashed by Goyle, which ultimately consumes him while Harry, Ron, and Hermione manage to save Malfoy and Zabini before escaping on broomsticks. Outside, Harry uses a Basilisk fang to stab the diadem, and Ron kicks it into the inferno. During the battle at Hogwarts, Harry realizes that Nagini, Voldemort’s snake, is the last Horcrux as he looks into Voldemort’s mind. In the boathouse, the trio overhears Voldemort explaining to Snape that the Elder Wand cannot serve him until Snape is dead. Nagini then attacks Snape viciously as he dies, providing Harry with one of his memories.

Harry examines Snape’s memory in the Pensieve, discovering that Snape had a deep dislike for Harry’s father, James, who had bullied him. However, he loved Harry’s mother, Lily. Following Lily’s death, Snape became a double agent among the Death Eaters, working with Albus Dumbledore to protect Harry from Voldemort. Harry also learns that it was Snape who conjured the Patronus doe that led Harry to Gryffindor’s sword. Additionally, Harry discovers that he had unintentionally become a Horcrux when Voldemort’s curse failed to kill him initially. To destroy the shard of Voldemort’s soul within him, Voldemort must kill Harry himself. Using the Resurrection Stone kept inside the Golden Snitch given to him, Harry conjures the spirits of his parents, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin, who provide him comfort before he surrenders to Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. Voldemort casts the Killing Curse on Harry, who awakens in a state of limbo. There, he encounters Dumbledore’s spirit, who explains that Harry is now free of Voldemort’s influence and can choose to return to his body or move on. Harry selects the former.
Voldemort displays what appears to be Harry’s lifeless body and demands the surrender of Hogwarts. In response, Neville defies him by drawing the Sword of Gryffindor from the Sorting Hat. Harry, revealing that he is alive, prompts the Malfoys and many other Death Eaters to desert Voldemort, who is disheartened upon discovering that Harry survived. In a final duel throughout the castle, Harry faces off against Voldemort. Meanwhile, in the Great Hall, Molly Weasley slays Bellatrix, and Neville beheads Nagini, thus eliminating the last of the Horcruxes. Harry eventually defeats Voldemort after the Expelliarmus charm deflects the Killing Curse, causing it to rebound and vanquish the Dark Lord. After the battle, Harry clarifies to Ron and Hermione that the Elder Wand did not truly belong to Voldemort. The wand recognized Harry as its master, following an earlier disarming by Draco, who had previously disarmed the wand’s true owner, Dumbledore, atop the Astronomy Tower. Rather than claiming the Elder Wand, Harry chooses to destroy it.
Nineteen years later, Harry and his friends joyfully observe their children departing for Hogwarts at King’s Cross station.
