Harry Potter experiences a distressing nightmare involving the murder of a Muggle caretaker who overheard a sinister plot by Lord Voldemort, Peter Pettigrew, and an unidentified man. Subsequently, Harry, along with the Weasley family, Hermione, Cedric Diggory, and his father Amos, attends the Quidditch World Cup. Tragedy strikes as Death Eaters attack the tournament, and the enigmatic figure from Harry’s dream conjures the ominous Dark Mark.
Upon returning to Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore reveals that the school will host the prestigious Triwizard Tournament, featuring participants from Durmstrang Institute in central Europe and Beauxbatons Academy in France. The Goblet of Fire will select one champion from each school, with students under seventeen ineligible. Fleur Delacour represents Beauxbatons, Viktor Krum is chosen from Durmstrang, and Cedric is the champion from Hogwarts. Inexplicably, the Goblet of Fire also selects Harry as the unexpected fourth champion, sparking confusion and accusations of cheating. This causes Ron to distance himself from Harry, hurt that his friend didn’t confide in him about his supposed entry.
The first task challenges the champions to retrieve a golden egg while contending with a fearsome dragon. Professor Moody, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, suggests that Harry use his wand to summon his broomstick. All four champions successfully complete the task. Ron reconciles with Harry after realizing the perilous nature of the challenge. During the Christmas season, the school hosts the Yule Ball, with Harry and Ron unable to attend with their preferred dates. Instead, they accompany Parvati and Padma Patil, while Hermione goes with Viktor. Cedric advises Harry to use the Prefects’ bathroom to gain insights for the second task through the golden egg.

In the second task, the champions must rescue someone dear to them from the Black Lake. Harry saves Ron, Cedric rescues his girlfriend Cho Chang, Viktor retrieves Hermione, and Fleur attempts to save her sister. Neville Longbottom provides Harry with gillyweed to aid him in breathing underwater. Cedric finishes first, and Harry earns second place by not only rescuing Ron but also saving Fleur’s sister after Fleur abandons the task. Harry later stumbles upon the lifeless body of Barty Crouch Sr., a high-ranking Ministry of Magic official, in the Forbidden Forest. In Dumbledore’s office, he uses a Pensieve to witness a prior trial of Igor Karkaroff, the current headmaster of Durmstrang, during Voldemort’s first rise to power. Karkaroff identifies Severus Snape as a Death Eater, a claim Dumbledore defends. Karkaroff then exposes Barty Crouch Jr., the son of the imprisoned Crouch Sr., who was in charge of the trial. Harry recognizes Crouch Jr. from his nightmare.
In the third task, the champions must navigate a perilous maze to reach the Triwizard Cup at its center. Harry and Cedric reach the Cup, which unexpectedly turns out to be a Portkey transporting them to a graveyard. There, Peter Pettigrew kills Cedric on Voldemort’s orders and resurrects the dark wizard. Voldemort tries to use the Killing Curse on Harry, but the spirits of his previous victims manifest, momentarily distracting him and allowing Harry to use the Portkey to return to Hogwarts with Cedric’s lifeless body.
Harry informs Dumbledore of Cedric’s murder by Voldemort, but the Ministry of Magic denies the truth. Harry is brought to Professor Moody’s office, only to discover that it wasn’t Moody at all, but Barty Crouch Jr. in disguise using Polyjuice Potion. The real Moody is found imprisoned in a magical trunk. Crouch Jr. is promptly returned to Azkaban.
At the end-of-term feast, Dumbledore reveals that Cedric was killed by Voldemort, although the Ministry continues to reject this reality. Harry shares his encounter with Voldemort with Dumbledore, who describes it as Priori Incantatem. The three schools bid farewell to each other, with Harry, Ron, and Hermione recognizing that significant changes are on the horizon.
