While residing with the Dursleys, Harry Potter and Dudley encounter a terrifying Dementor attack. Harry manages to repel these dark creatures using a Patronus spell. However, the Ministry of Magic detects Harry using underage magic and temporarily expels him from Hogwarts. He is later cleared of any wrongdoing.

The Order of the Phoenix, a covert organization founded by Albus Dumbledore, informs Harry about the Ministry of Magic’s efforts to downplay the return of Lord Voldemort. At the Order’s secret headquarters, Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black, hints that Voldemort is searching for an elusive object, which Harry suspects might be a powerful weapon.

Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge appoints Dolores Umbridge as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts. Umbridge’s refusal to teach practical defense techniques leads to conflicts between her and Harry. To punish Harry for his outspokenness about Voldemort, Umbridge forces him to write lines, which are etched onto his hand by a magical quill. Though Ron and Hermione are outraged, Harry refuses to confide in Dumbledore, who has distanced himself from Harry. As Umbridge tightens her grip on the school, Ron and Hermione assist Harry in forming “Dumbledore’s Army,” a secret group aimed at teaching students defensive spells. Umbridge enlists Slytherin students to create an Inquisitorial Squad, tasked with spying on the rest of the student body. In the midst of these events, Harry develops romantic feelings for Cho Chang.

Harry experiences troubling visions, including one where he witnesses an attack on Arthur Weasley at the Ministry from the perspective of the attacker. Fearing that Voldemort may exploit this connection, Dumbledore arranges for Severus Snape to teach Harry Occlumency, a technique to protect his mind from Voldemort’s influence. During one lesson, Harry sees Snape’s memories of how his father, James, had tormented and bullied Snape during their school days. The link between Harry and Voldemort further distances Harry from his friends. Concurrently, Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius’s unhinged Death Eater relative, escapes from Azkaban prison alongside nine other Death Eaters. At Hogwarts, Umbridge exposes Dumbledore’s Army, falsely accusing Dumbledore of forming it, before he escapes as Fudge orders his arrest. Harry believes Cho may have betrayed Dumbledore’s Army to Umbridge, leading to the end of their budding relationship. Umbridge takes over as the new Headmistress.

In the midst of these developments, Harry has a vision of Voldemort torturing Sirius. In a desperate rush to inform the Order, he, Ron, and Hermione are caught by Umbridge just as she’s about to punish Harry severely. Hermione claims that Dumbledore has hidden a “secret weapon” in the Forbidden Forest. Harry and Hermione lead Umbridge to where Hagrid’s giant half-brother, Grawp, resides. The centaurs confront them and abduct Umbridge after she insults and attacks them. Subsequently, Harry, Hermione, Ron, Luna, Neville, and Ginny use Thestrals to fly to the Ministry of Magic in an attempt to save Sirius.

The group infiltrates the Department of Mysteries and retrieves the object Voldemort is seeking: a prophecy labeled with Harry’s name. However, they are ambushed by Death Eaters, including Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. Lucius reveals that Harry’s vision of Sirius being tortured was a trap to lure him there. Harry refuses to surrender the prophecy, leading to a fierce battle between Dumbledore’s Army and the Death Eaters. The Death Eaters gain the upper hand, compelling Harry to hand over the prophecy. Just as he gives it to Lucius, Sirius and Remus Lupin, along with Order members Nymphadora Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and Mad-Eye Moody, arrive to counter the Death Eaters. A ferocious clash ensues, with Lucius accidentally dropping the prophecy and shattering it. As Sirius overpowers Lucius, Bellatrix kills Sirius.

Voldemort himself materializes, but just as he is about to kill Harry, Dumbledore intervenes. A fierce duel ensues, causing significant destruction in the Atrium. Voldemort’s attempt to possess Harry’s body, hoping that Dumbledore would sacrifice him, fails as Harry’s love for his friends and family drives Voldemort out. Ministry officials arrive before Voldemort disapparates, and Fudge acknowledges Voldemort’s return before resigning in disgrace. Umbridge is dismissed, and Dumbledore returns as Hogwarts headmaster. Dumbledore explains that he had distanced himself from Harry to protect him from Voldemort exploiting their connection and reveals the prophecy: “Neither can live while the other survives.” Harry, while grieving Sirius’s death, grapples with the prophecy’s ominous implications.
